Abstract

The construction of reservoirs changes the natural conditions of a watercourse. Among the main changes the reduction of water flow speed can be mentioned, which starts the reservoir’s silting and, consequently, the progressive reduction of its useful life. The reservoir management is based on the elevation x area x volume curve, which must be updated periodically, since the reservoirs are dynamic systems subjected to a continuous decline in its useful volume due to the silting process. This article presents a convenient and accurate method for bathymetric surveys of PCH Pipoca reservoir, through the use of a single beam echo sounder. The reservoir is located in Manhuaçu river basin, between the municipalities of Caratinga and Ipanema, Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the elevation x area x volume curve of PCH Pipoca reservoir, by obtaining a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the submerged reservoir relief, determining the volume of water and the the reservoir water area. The bathymetric survey was conducted by planning bathymetric sections of 30 meters along the reservoir length, and a longitudinal section of the dam axis to the reservoir backwater. From the results obtained, it was observed the presence of highest depths closest to the dam axis and shallower near the reservoir backwater and arms.
