Rituals, Stereotypies, and Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior

Abstract

(from the chapter) Rituals, stereotypies, and obsessive-compulsive behavior are all terms used to describe one of the core symptoms of autistic disorder and autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Their inclusion in the symptomatology related to ASDs can be traced back to Kanner's description of the disorder, which included various forms of repetition such as rituals, motor stereotypy, compulsions, and obsessions. Bodfish et al. and Bodfish point out that there is a lack of consensus regarding the terminology used to refer to such behavior. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of treatments that are effective to reduce such repetitive behavior exhibited by individuals diagnosed with ASDs. The chapter will begin with a description of repetitive behavior problems and their expression in the population of individuals with ASDs. Next, a brief discussion will be provided regarding the behavioral assessment of repetitive behavior disorders. Finally, the remainder of the chapter will focus on a discussion and description of the behavioral treatment strategies that have been effective in reducing the occurrence of repetitive behavior disorders. Examples in application of each treatment strategy will be provided. To the extent possible, these examples will be those implemented with individuals diagnosed with ASD.
