Posterior vaginal wall prolapse is a hernia of intraabdominal contents through the fascia or fibromuscular posterior wall of the vagina or its attachment to the perineal body. A rectocele involves only herniation of the rectum (Figure 40.1); a culdocele involves herniation of cul-de-sac contents (Figure 40.2) and comprises enteroceles, peritoneoceles, and sigmoidoceles. © 2006 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
