Abstract

The basis for many ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) applications is high quality data which, up until now, has been captured using dedicated traffic sensor networks. In more and more countries, Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems are being implemented to finance the traffic infrastructure and regulate traffic demand. Such systems offer an ideal source of data and allow the use of ETC infrastructure like overhead gantries for further traffic telematics solutions. Therefore ETC systems will increasingly become the "backbone" for the telematics strategies of road operators in the future. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
