Abstract

In this text we shall examine the overview of the Spanish transition to democracy offered by the Anglo-North American writers during the 1970s and 1980s. This was a contemporary point of view stemmed from a broader Hispanist perspective, which enabled these authors to construct a coherent narrative of the Spanish change with the emphasis on its historical aspects. According to it, the Transition would have brought about a spectacular turn, begun throughout the second Francoism, to a longstanding history as the Spanish one marked by peculiarities and anomalies. The importance of this external angle lies in two circumstances: its pioneering character in the historiography of the topic, and the fact of having provided this subject with a stable and reliable interpretation.
