Abstract

A crucial element in the development of a Flood Forecasting Program is a real-time data collection network. Data requirements vary, depending on lead time necessary to provide early warning of impending floods or for providing information on management of water control systems. Areas discussed include data requirements for major river floods; flash floods; snowmelt floods; and water management information. Collecting hydrometeorological data manually; using automated gages utilizing telephone, radio, and satellite; and by remote sensing using radar, satellites , and aircraft are discussed. Implementation of networks in the United States is described.
