Interlanguage and its Manifestations in Translation

Abstract

Interlang forms can occur when- & wherever one language is used in contact with another. Translated texts abound in interlingual phenomena, making their presence a "universal of translation." This is a necessary outcome of tension between two incompatible postulates necessary for translation: (1) adequacy, dictating maximal representation of a preexisting text in another lang, & (2) acceptability, dictating the appropriate position of the translated texts in the target system(s). Every translation occupies a certain position between these two extremes; its establishment forms an integral part of the study of translation. In some circumstances, interlang is even preferred to "pure" target language forms; acceptability is sacrificed in favor of greater representation of the original text & lang, creating a special acceptability norm "as a translation."
