Lesions of the breast in the pediatric population are relatively common and nearly always benign. The problems seen by a pediatric surgeon fall into four major categories: developmental, inflammatory/infectious, traumatic, and neoplastic. Many pediatric breast lesions do not require surgical intervention. When surgery is indicated, the overriding principles of pediatric breast surgery include: preservation of developing tissue, periareolar access whenever possible, and adequate resection based on pathology. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
