This book explains the most significant neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including the pathogens and vectors, public health concerns and preventive measures, and details their enormous physical, social and economic costs to individuals and nations alike. It is composed of 12 chapters. The first chapter provides an introduction to NTDs and the next 8 chapters (Chapter 2-9) focus on the different NTDs, including soil-transmitted infections (ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infections), schistosomiasis, filarial infections (lymphatic filariasis/elephantiasis and dracunculiasis), blinding NTDs (onchocerciasis and trachoma), mycobacterial infections (Buruli ulcer and leprosy), kinetoplastid infections (human African trypanosomiasis, Chagas' disease and leishmaniasis), urban NTDs (leptospirosis, dengue and rabies) and NTDs of North America. The last 3 chapters (Chapter 10-12) describe the global network and future trends of, as well as the low-cost and highly cost-effective measures to, control NTDs.
