The phenomenology and kinetics of nucleation, crystal growth, and melting in glass-forming systems are discussed. It is shown that studies of transformation kinetics in such systems can help elucidate problems in the field of crystal growth. Consideration is limited to systems which crystallize without change of composition, i.e., pure, single-component materials or congruently melting compunds.
