Outline of the History

Abstract

The term `electrophoresis,' that is, the motion of charged particles under the influence of an applied electric field, was formulated as early as the nineteenth century. The first to use electrophoresis as a technique for mixtures separation was Tiselius, who for his accomplishments was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 11 years later. Others to contribute to the development of capillary electrophoresis were Hjertén, Jorgenson and Lukacs, as well as Terabe. This chapter presents a brief historical outline of electromigration techniques.
