Abstract

Research in varieties of English, led by Ravinder Gargesh and others, contributes not only to theoretical language studies but also to practical language pedagogy. This chapter discusses methodology for helping students in higher education to acquire linguistic as well as sociolinguistic skills in EIL (English as an International Language), or English for international communication beyond Anglophone frame of reference, by taking advantage of EMI (English-Medium Instruction) classes. The pedagogy, named CELFIL (Content and English as a Lingua Franca Integrated Learning) by drawing on the concept of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), is described with a framework known as “approach, design, and procedure.” From an eclectic and integrative position, multiple paradigms of global Englishes, including WE (world Englishes) and ELF (English as a Lingua Franca), are combined with EIL for this pedagogical practice. It is hoped that the principles and practices presented here will promote the further development of concrete pedagogy for training EIL skills.
