Data documentation systems

Abstract

A large and increasing amount of data that is produced in small animal imaging has to be handled. Additionally, it is often desirable that this data is safely stored for later retrieval and re-investigation. In this chapter, we will give information for data handling for both basic researchers as well as users of routine small animal imaging sites. Therefore, we will firstly identify necessary data documentation and handling tasks in small animal imaging. Then, we will introduce and discuss solutions that are currently found in small animal imaging data management followed by a description of an ideal small animal data storage/workflow environment. While in some sections moderate or advanced computer knowledge may be necessary for understanding, the focus is on the practical side of data management in small animal imaging. In the end, practical hints and tips will be given to the computer inexperienced researcher including a list of mostly freely available and useful software solutions. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
