Abstract

The importance of a good understanding of the characteristics of animal genetic resources is very necessary to serve as a reference for decision making in livestock development and breeding programs. This study aims to identify phenotype diversity of quantitative traits of burgo chickens, red jungle fowl, and kampung chickens especially in Bengkulu, and analyze the determinants of their size and shape. The research material used was 47 burgo chickens, 9 red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus spadiceus), and 18 native chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). Samples were taken using purposive sampling technique and the chicken taken was an adult chicken in Mukomuko Regency, North Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Tengah Regency, Bengkulu City, and Bengkulu Selatan Regency, Bengkulu Province. Based on the results, it can be concluded that: (1) burgo chicken and red jungle chicken have quantitative traits with low level of diversity (monomorphic), conversely kampung chickens having qualitative traits with high levels of diversity (polymorphic), and (2) the determinant of the size of the burgo chicken is the length of the lower thigh (male) and the length of the third toe (female), the red jungle chicken is the length of the lower thigh (male) and the length of the upper thigh (female), and the native chicken is the length of the shank, while the determinant of the shape burgo chicken is the length of the lower thigh, red jungle chicken is the length of the third toe, and the native chicken is the length of the shank.
