Abstract

A new, expanded edition of this collection of critiques of civilization, its dehumanizing core, and debilitating effects on the entire planet. Unsurprisingly (and wisely) it steers clear of any promulgation of primitivism as such. Instead, we do get barbed words of wisdom from a host of fine writers (and the odd lunatic), including Thoreau, Fredy Perlman, Marshall Sahlins, Chellis Glendinning, Pierre Clastres, Derrick Jensen, Frederick Turner, Adorno, Horkheimer, the Russian Anarcho-Futurists, Charles Fourier, Ivan Illich, Ursula K. Le Guin, Chrystos, Theodore Roszak, Rudolf Bahro, William Morris, and more.
