The occurrence and types of phosphate minerals in human tissues are reviewed. The minerals include hydroxyapatite, whitlockite, struvite, newberyite and brushite. The formation of apatites as the principal constituent of normal calcification (enamel, dentine, bone) is associated with specific types of organic material and the presence or absence of inhibitors.-R.A.H.
