Abstract

(from the chapter) The development of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders as a group of conditions linked by similar core symptomatology has inspired much debate among scholars. In light of the current trend to seek empirically validated and effective treatment strategies, this concept has become more useful. Similar symptomatology suggests possibly similar treatment approaches, which is particularly helpful for disorders that have traditionally been a challenge to treat, such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and hypochondriasis (HC). The current chapter will explore the similarities between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and BDD and HC in an attempt to conceptualize them within the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders.
