Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in patients aged 65 and older and can range from mild self-limited episodes of constipation or acid reflux to life-threatening episodes of infectious colitis or bowel ischemia. Due to the aging of the population, geriatric-aged patients 65 and older will likely form a significant percentage of the practice of both medical and surgical specialists. This chapter highlights common clinical presentations in this population and the superimposed effect of other comorbidities and their treatments. Balancing risks and benefits of treatment in this population requires an understanding the impact of chronic disease and patient preferences of older adults.
