Abstract

The distinction between modal predicates and modal sentential operators is introduced and basic objections to the predicate approach to modality are critically discussed. The focus is on arguments against the predicate approach from linguistics, philosophy of language and metaphysics, such as, Lewy’s Argument. The chapter ends with an introduction to some basic formal tools that are employed throughout the monograph.
