Abstract

Various organic compounds containing SH and/or SS are found in organisms, and are playing important roles to maintain life. In this review, the nature of the groups and their reactions of biological importance are described surrounding following topics: evolution of hydrogen sulfide from boiled egg, disulfide interchange, stereostructure of disulfide group, thioester linkage and its biological significance, role of acyl carrier protein, and metallothionein. © 1977, The Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.
