Abstract

The introduction to Mistrusted Masculinity sets the stage by introducing the father Omar and how he feels that the Danish welfare system has taken the responsibility away from the Muslim migrant father. The introduction then presents the reader to some of the conditions of being a Muslim migrant in Denmark, and exemplifies how Muslim migrant-citizens have been categorised and othered due to an anti-Muslim-immigrant sentiment in Danish integration-politics. Within this sentiment genders are constructed differently, whereas the “Muslim migrant man” figures as a potential oppressor of both women and children, whereas women are constructed as vulnerable and in need of information about their freedom to choose for themselves. The introduction also presents the reader to studies on fatherhood, masculinity and home-school cooperation, as well as provides an overview of the theoretical and methodological reflections of the study.
