Experiments on shot noise in the current through atomic-sized metallic contacts reveal information on the composition of the contact in terms of transmission eigenmodes. Results for the monovalent metal gold and the sp metal aluminum are presented and discussed in relation to the expected number of conductance channels and the information obtained from the analysis of the superconducting subgap structure for such contacts.
