Tongue image matching is an important part for a tongue diagnosis system. Unlike common pattern recognition problems, it is hard to define the ground truth for tongue image matching because visual inspection of tongue by doctors is determined by the experience and knowledge of them. Here we propose to use, Mean Rank, as an objective and scientific criterion to evaluate matching performance. Instigating from color demosaicking, a new color texture operator, Primary Difference Signal Local Binary Pattern is proposed. The matching performance is evaluated on color, gray-scale and color texture, and fusion of color and texture features. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
