Abstract

Nowadays, the work of a classification society associated with design assessment increasingly relies on the support of computer based numerical simulations. Although design assessments based on advanced finite-element analyses have long been part of the services of a classification society, the scope and depth of recently developed and applied simulation methods was so rapid that we present here a survey of these techniques as well as samples of typical applications. The article focuses on the basics of the techniques and points out progress achieved as well as current improvements. Listed references describe the simulation techniques and the individual applications in more detail.
