Abstract

This volume reviews and updates the information on the structure and function of sponge cells. The text is comprised of 9 chapters which discuss morphology, the epithelia, cellular components; and calcification, silicification, and bioerosion. Other chapters discuss collagen fibrils and matrix substances, canal system structure and activities, embryo and larval development, tissue regression, and growth and regeneration. The text is supplemented by 600 illustrations which include more than 500 photographs. An extensive reference list and an index are also included.
