Abstract

The Murray 2 power station, built by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority in 1966-68 in Australia, has four 137 MW vertical shaft francis turbines supplied by two surface pipelines. Since commissioning, the pipelines have emitted a low frequency noise when the units were generating. The causes of the noise were investigated. Options for eliminating the noise were evaluated and resonators were installed on the spiral casing manholes of the turbines.
