This paper gives a summary of the results of the project Evaluation of$\$nthe Disastrous Floods in August 2002. The project was brought about by$\$nthe efforts of several scientific institutions of different disciplines,$\$ncoordinated by the T.G.M. Water Research Institute. The main objective$\$nof the project was to assess the consequences and causes of the$\$nflooding, in a broad spectrum. The paper will start with an$\$nidentification of meteorological conditions which caused the flood event$\$nand the hydrological conditions during the flood. Secondly the flood$\$nextremity is assessed in terms of the return periods and historical$\$nflood events. Furthermore the warning and forecasting service and social$\$neconomic consequences are discussed.
