Abstract

In this essay, the author addresses each of the major areas of suicidology research, reviews its contribution to our understanding of suicide, and makes suggestions for the future. Topics include: sociological studies of suicide; physiological approaches to understanding suicide (genetics, brain studies); psychiatric research; psychological studies; family studies; preventing suicide; past innovators; and future directions.
