Abstract

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine supported the work of committees of experts appointed in the sleep field for the development of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 2nd edn (ICSD-2). This 300-plus page book classifies and categorizes the spectrum of sleep disorders. This article provides the reader an abbreviated overview, focused on key parts of the ICSD-2, especially those that are new or changed information compared to the ICSD-1. These changes are highlighted and discussed. The rationale for the revisions is identified. This article also discusses the methodological changes, the benefits of the new version, and items that will assist the clinician or interested reader in the use of ICSD-2 for differential diagnosis among the types of sleep disorders.
