Abstract

detailed the psychological characteristics associated with psychophysiological disorders of the gastrointestinal [GI] tract and the psychological treatment strategies that have been shown useful in alleviating or eliminating the symptoms accompanying these disorders / the most effective procedures have involved behavioral, cognitive, and psychophysiological (i.e., biofeedback and relaxation training) forms of psychotherapy many of these techniques may be seen as involving various forms of stress management, and their effectiveness would appear to be associated with the central role that stress has been shown to play in the onset or exacerbation of functional and psychosomatic gastrointestinal disorders functional disorders of the GI tract [irritable bowel syndrome, esophageal disorders] / psychosomatic disorders of the GI tract [inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcer disease] / stress and abnormal GI functioning / treatment / program development and implementation (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
