Representative surveys show that within the last twelve months the majority of workers have gone to work despite being sick. At the same time, many employees are absent from work due to sickness or other reasons once or several times per year. The magnitude of and the reasons for this presenteeism and absenteeism behaviour are complex and vary among different groups of workers, firms, and sectors in Germany. The authors show that presenteeism and absence from work are only weakly correlated and that specific measures are needed to address each of these phenomena.
