Magnesium plays a very important role in wide-range biochemical metabolism, especially fundamental cellular reactions. It is explained that magnesium is essential ion for cofactors of over 300 enzyme systems, for example, as a part of the magnesium-adenosine triphosphate (Mg-ATP) complex or as an enzyme activator in experimental and clinical observations. © 2007 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
