Abstract

The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was established in 2012, as an independent intergovernmental body open to all member countries of the United Nations. It has been developed as the leading intergovernmental body for assessing the state of biodiversity, including its ecosys- tems and the ecosystem services that provide benefits to people. The structure and purpose of IPBES are described and the work program introduced, including the conceptual framework that has been developed.
