Abstract

The second chapter of this work provides an overview of the fundamentals of radar. In a short introduction the radar equation and its implications are presented. In the following pros and cons of monostatic and bistatic antenna concepts are discussed. An overview of different modulation methods for radar applications are given, such as pulse-doppler radar, FMCW radar and M-sequence based approaches. The respective architectures and technical limitations regarding bandwidth, range, and resolution are given. Furthermore, applications of radar systems in the automotive area are outlined as well as different practical sensor classes and the current status of international frequency regulations.
