Abstract

While hard work under adverse conditions contributed to the turnaround of Vietnam's economy in the last 30 years, economic policy was crucial in channeling that work. This chapter documents the evolution of that policy in four sections. A first section describes early efforts beginning with the independence of the North from French colonization in 1945 and 1954 to the first decade after the war with the United States of America. The second section details the economic reforms (doi moi) of the Sixth National Congress in 1986. The third section covers amendments and implementation up until recent years. The final section reports the results of these policies.
