Abstract

In the context of accelerated international competition on the one hand and financial austerity on the other, economic aspects of knowledge have gained an unprecedented significance. Along with universities’ traditional missions of teaching and research, an economic development mission has become an important strategic and policy issue for universities, governments and local authorities (Etzkowitz & Leydesdorff, 1997; Laredo, 2007).
