Abstract

Over a decade ago, the world celebrated the development of Ketek (telithromycin), the first ketolide antibiotic and a powerful tool in our arsenal against deadly microbes. Only a few months after its approval, however, it was linked to several fatal outcomes. Subsequent investigations revealed major fraud issues in the manufacturer’s clinical trials. The real story reveals catastrophic illness in the system governing pharmaceutical development, and even now there are doubts that regulations can prevent another Ketek.
