Abstract

The articles in this focus section emphasize the multidiscipli nary nature of producing deformation models for the NSHM and highlight the diversity and complexity of deformation models. They also bring out challenges involved with implementing these models in the earthquake rate model, in which information from multiple models derived with different methodologies and resolution must be accommodated in a consistent fashion (Powers and Field, 2015). We hope that this collection of articles will serve as both documentation of the deformation models for the 2023 NSHM update as well as an impetus to develop revised or new deformation models that can be implemented more systematically in future updates.
