Morbid obesity is a chronic disease of excess fat storage, characterised by premature death and obesity-associated co-morbidities. The results of the current non-surgical treatment to treat obesity are disappointing, but surgical approaches may achieve a durable and longstanding weight loss with resolution and improvement of co-morbidities. Gastrointestinal complaints and digestive complications may, however, increase and may require an actively involved gastroenterologist. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
