In this interview, Lisa Outar explores with the Indo-Guadeloupean female artist, Kelly Sinnapah Mary, her experiences growing up as a descendant of indentured Indians in the Francophone Caribbean, her training as an artist in France, her diverse influences, and Sinnapah Mary’s own narratives for framing the work that she does to delve into themes of gendered identity, sexual violence, and cultural reconstruction. The interview highlights the broad array of techniques that the artist brings to bear on these explorations, including so-called feminine arts of braiding and sewing.
