Extreme programming (XP) is one of the agile software development methodologies. It achieves its goals by the implementation of twelve practices, all aimed at reducing risks in software development and improving software quality. This paper presents two chasms inherent in software development processes - a cognitive chasm and a social chasm - and describes, based on our experience, how the twelve XP practices can help bridge these chasms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.
