Abstract

A general textbook, providing concise coverage of the fundamentals of wood science, and bringing up to date earlier treatments cf. F.A. 13 No. 2385; 26 No. 1140. The chapter headings are: The structure of wood and the cell wall; Chemical composition of wood: Defects and abnormalities of wood; Biological deterioration of wood; Wood preservation; Physics of wood; Mechanics and rheology of wood; Steaming and seasoning of wood; and Wood machining. Each chapter includes a bibliography. Vol. II will cover wood-base and composite materials, including adhesion and adhesives.
