Abstract

The chapter focuses on the sociocultural, political and economic foundations of a key institution of the third sector in Germany. Welfare organizations are outlined in terms of organizational sociology, and volunteer work is described as their constitutive element. Finally, recognizing traditional volunteer-work concepts and the dynamics of sociocultural changes, the authors will point out the facets and dilemmas of volunteer work as an economic resource.
