Abstract

Learning Objectives: After reading this chapter and answering the discussion questions that follow, you should be able to Discuss the meaning and causes of disabilities. Present an overview of the global prevalence of disabilities among women, children, and adolescents. Discuss the relationship between poverty and disability. Appraise how local attitudes and beliefs frame society's perspective on disability and the effects these have on the health of women, children, and adolescents with disabilities. Evaluate international and national efforts and strategies to improve access to health and social care for women, children, and adolescents with disabilities. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2009.
