The authors' research aimed to identify the innovation management challenges of large energy corporations operating in Hungary. These companies are facing corporate renewal initiatives caused by recent significant changes of the global energy sector. They also tried to identify connections between the implementation of innovation initiatives and the need for organizational changes and change management. The research was based on inductive logic and qualitative methodology. They have found that innovation initiatives were explicitly or implicitly included in the strategies of large energy companies operating in Hungary. The implementation of innovation, however, is often blocked by internal and external factors related to traditional organizational structures, organizational culture and knowledge management. In order to successfully face their renewal challenges, large energy companies could establish new organizational units to separate structurally the new business development from the traditional activities. They could also initiate organizational changes by moderate structural separation and contextual development creating adequate conditions to exploit innovation capabilities.
