It is known that uraffium exists in groundwater mainly in form of affion complexes. Theitfore uraffium sorption on soil particles (affion exchange capacity of which is low) is weak. As a result uraffium can migrate from the uraffium containing waste deposits (waste rock pile, tailings ponds, etc.) causing groundwater contamination. In Hungary in the frame of EU sponsored PEREBAR project a pilot-scale permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was built in 2002 for in situ treatment of uranium contaminated groundwater. The installation still works. The results of the six years' experiment are discussed bellow.
