Abstract

The world of work in 21st century has changed to such a degree that we have entered a new paradigm where traditional models of career counseling and development, while necessary, are no longer able to address the complex career issues that individuals currently face. This chapter discusses the changing nature of work and provides suggestions to help career counselors address the complex career-related needs of a diverse array of clients. The constructs of career adaptability and resilience are introduced as abilities and skills that clients can develop to promote and enhance their own employability. An overview of the Life Design Counseling tenets (Savickas in Life-design counseling manual, 2015; Savickas et al. in Journal of Vocational Behavior 75:239-250, 2009) sets the theoretical foundations for discussing the use of the Career Construction Interview (CCI; Savickas in Career development and counseling: putting theory and research to work. Wiley, Hoboken, 2005) in career counseling. The chapter concludes by providing Life Design Counseling resources for practitioners, educators, and researchers.
