Abstract

Introduction: Therapeutic patient education (TPE) is a field of research which is providing an increasing number of scientific publications in medical journals. An interface developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) to query its MEDLINE bibliographic database, PubMed, is considered to be the best free biomedical search engine. This article concerns bibliographic research for TPE: how to use PubMed. What are the keywords which can be used? Discussion: Several search strategies that can be used by the researcher are described here. The two problems usually encountered in bibliographic research will be referred to: "noise" (too few results and low relevance) and "silence" (lack of results). PubMed's filters have just as important a role as the optimization of the search strategy to improve bibliographic research. Conclusion: Technical improvements are expected in the use of PubMed's filters.
