Abstract

One of the major criticisms of residential treatment for youth has been that treatment gains are not maintained post-discharge. A strength-based, family systems approach throughout treatment is crucial in order to increase the likelihood of adolescents maintaining treatment gains when they return to their homes and communities. This book highlighted emerging approaches and foundational techniques for engaging adolescents and family members in the treatment process and providing effective family therapy services. The authors addressed inherent clinical and methodological challenges to conducting research in this setting and provided practical suggestions for conducting studies and applying results in order to strengthen the place of family therapy.
