Abstract
Obesity is a disease with a significant morbidity and mortality. About 3.4 million deaths related to obesity have been estimated worldwide in 2010, and its prevalence rose by 27.5% among adults between 1980 and 2013. Because of the far superior results of the surgical treatment compared to the medical therapy for obesity, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has issued a grade A recommendation for bariatric surgery in patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥40 kg/m2 or for those with BMI ≥35 kg/m2 and comorbidity unresponsive to previous medical treatment.
